How Do We Source Our Stones?
Curious about our sourcing methods? Let’s get into it! Having achieved master jeweler status, designed countless pieces of fine jewelry, and started her own fine jewelry line, it’s no surprise that Melanie Casey is also an expert in sourcing diamonds and gemstones. Melanie both hand-selects each stone for our one of a kind pieces and reviews each client-selected stone for our choose your own diamond collection. Here, you’ll learn about Melanie’s sourcing standards as well as how our sourced stones are set.
…But, first things first. How do we measure diamond quality? That’s all thanks to the 4 C’s.
The 4 C’s
So, how is the quality of a diamond measured? By the 4 C’s of course! The 4 C’s were coined in the 1940s by Robert M. Shipley, the founder of GIA, and are as follows: carat, clarity, color, and cut. Evaluating each of these factors has become the universal language by which to assess the quality of a diamond.
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. You will always see the carat amount for any stone we source in the listing title. While diamonds with more carats are deemed rarer, your desired carat size will depend on personal taste and the piece it is set in.
Clarity refers to the clearness of a diamond. Diamonds almost always have inclusions: natural “flaws” inside or on the surface. The fewer inclusions, the better the clarity grade. But beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. Some diamonds, like salt and pepper diamonds, get their unique aesthetic from having inclusions.
Color refers to the colorlessness of a diamond. Diamond color exists on a scale of completely colorless to light brown. The more colorless the diamond, the higher the color grade. Just as with each of the other 4C’s, color can be subjective. A champagne diamond can be just as striking as a colorless diamond in the right setting.
Cut refers to how well a diamond's shape and faceting have been cut. Of the 4 C’s, this is the most difficult to quantify because it depends on how the diamond interacts with the light. The quality of the cut literally refers to how a diamond sparkles, refracts, and shines.
Other gemstones, like sapphires, are graded similarly, however, the unique nature of gemstones prevents them from adhering to a set of grading guidelines as strictly as diamonds. Of the 4 C’s, color is much more complex when grading colored diamonds and gemstones. The category of color is broken down into three distinct categories: hue, tone, and saturation. Hue speaks to the color family while tone refers to how light or deep within that color family the gemstone is. Saturation is similar to tone but refers more so to the brightness of the color and exists on a scale of very light to vivid.
While the 4C’s are a great place to start, grading is always subjective, and excellent marks don’t always mean a better stone. That’s why it’s even more important to have a set of expert eyes on every stone we set into our designs.
Melanie’s the Expert!
Founder and designer Melanie Casey hand-selects, reviews, and maintains our extensive collection of diamonds and gemstones. As a master jeweler, Melanie knows the deep intricacies of sourcing both diamonds and gemstones. While she uses the 4C’s as a guideline, years of experience have informed her expert eye. She can spot a diamond’s quality, even when it's not represented on paper. This means you can be sure we will not set stones with good certification marks but low in-hand quality. This also means that Melanie can find stones of great price-to-quality value. For example, a stone with a lower clarity rating may come at a lower price point. Melanie, with her expert eye, can look at this diamond knowing that the inclusions will not be visible when set and take advantage of the price point without sacrificing quality.
As a fine jewelry line that values crafting practices and jewelry to outlast a lifetime, ethical and sustainable sourcing is non-negotiable. Melanie only sources from trusted suppliers whose quality can be verified, meaning that no matter if it's a diamond or gemstone, a Melanie Casey stone is of the highest quality. We are vetted members of the Ethical Metalsmith Community and only ever use ethically sourced stones and sustainable sourcing methods. We also prioritize using materials with low environmental impact like Montana sapphires and recycled gold.
So once Melanie has expertly sourced diamonds and gemstones, what do we do with them?
