Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?
It’s no secret that lab-grown diamonds have steadily grown in popularity over the last few years. Lab-grown diamonds were first developed in the 1950s but weren’t grown in large quantities until the 1980s. The earliest lab-grown diamonds were small and ranged in color from yellow to brown. The process of growing diamonds was perfected by scientists throughout the 1990s and 2000s, resulting in the large white and colored lab-grown diamonds we see today.
But, a major question permeates the conversation surrounding lab-grown diamonds: “Are lab-grown diamonds real?” The answer to this question is a simple one: yes! Despite being created in a lab, lab-grown diamonds have the same crystal structure as natural diamonds.
As you might be able to infer from their name, lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab! Labs can grow diamonds by recreating the Earth’s natural geological process with high heat and high temperature, or by using chemical vapor deposition. No matter the process, both create tightly bonded carbon atoms, the chemical composition of a diamond. A lab-grown diamond will look like a natural diamond. So, what’s the difference?
How are Lab-Grown Diamonds Different From Natural Diamonds?
The main difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond can be broken down into a single factor: time. A natural diamond takes billions of years to form. A lab-grown diamond can be created in a matter of days or weeks. Even though they are virtually identical, natural diamonds have a distinct growth history that gemological experts at institutions like the Gemological Institute of America or the International Gemological Institute can detect when certifying a diamond.
Both a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond go through the same certification process and are graded using the 4C’s: carat, cut, color, and clarity. Transparency is in our nature and our focal diamonds, whether lab-grown or natural, are certified by the GIA or IGI. Virtual certifications are always available to view before purchase because you deserve to be completely confident about the diamond you select..
Lab-grown diamonds are sold at a lower price than natural diamonds because natural diamonds are rarer than lab-grown diamonds. While there is currently no shortage of natural diamonds, ultimately, a finite amount of natural diamonds do exist. Because lab-grown diamonds are manufactured, they can continue to be produced indefinitely.
How Do I Find the Best Lab-Grown Diamond?
Like any natural diamond, the best lab-grown diamond will depend on the ring setting you choose and the 4C’s most important to you. If you’re interested in a bezel set engagement ring, color is an important consideration because the metal framework can bring more attention to any yellow tones in the stone. When choosing a rose cut engagement ring, clarity is the most important factor to consider because the transparent nature of the faceting makes any inclusions much more noticeable.
