Green Diamonds
What Is A Green Diamond?
You may have noticed our collection is bursting with green like a summer treeline, but it’s certainly not because these unique focal stones are easy to come by. Of all the colored diamond engagement rings, the green diamond ring is one of the rarest on Earth. So, why are they so rare? The answer to that question lies in how they’re made. A diamond becomes green when naturally occurring radioactive materials interact with the diamond and push carbon atoms out, changing the crystal structure of the diamond! This natural process of irradiation can also be replicated in a lab. Lab irradiation has a long history stretching back to the 1940s and uses electrons, neutrons, or gamma rays to give diamonds a green hue. Not to worry! Whether naturally occurring or made in a lab, green diamonds are never radioactive (they do have that glow though…). Designer Melanie Casey has carefully curated a selection of these mossy stones that meet her high sourcing standards. Below you’ll find Melanie’s favorite design elements to use alongside green focal diamonds.
Melanie’s Favorite Green Diamond Rings
Bold and Bezel Set
Setting green diamonds in a bezel makes this verdant stone pop. Outlining a green diamond in 14k yellow or white gold creates contrast, drawing attention to the depths of green within the stone by framing it with a different color. Our bezel settings feature sharp angles, exact edges, and crisp curves so this contemporary setting never overpowers the focal diamond. While you can see our full collection of green bezel set diamonds in our Green Diamond Collection, Melanie does have a few favorite bezel designs from the permanent collection that she loves for a green diamond! The Moonrise Ring features large white diamond side stones which enhances the contrast between the setting and focal stone. A green diamond fits perfectly into the nature-inspired Evenfall Ring, mirroring the petal-like taper with earthy hues.
Clustery Side Stones
Colored diamond engagement rings with clusters of accent diamonds are a hallmark of Melanie’s collection. When paired with a green diamond focal, clustery side stones bring effervescent sparkle to deep, mossy greens. Melanie intentionally designs each cluster of diamonds to incorporate movement and weightlessness, often setting the stones at different levels to make them more dynamic. You can find each green diamond engagement ring with side clusters in our Green Diamond Collection. However, there are a few designs that often appear with green focal stones! The Snowdrift Ring puts the green in winter greenery, the flurry-like accents appearing like snow on evergreen trees. The On The Horizon Ring flanks the focal in a diamond horizon that appears to begin within the center stone and ripple outwards, carrying sparkle across your finger.
Nature Inspired Designs
With green being at the heart of nature, it's no surprise that a nature-inspired green diamond ring would be on the list of Melanie’s favorite ways to set a green diamond! Our engagement rings span the spectrum of nature, finding inspiration in the night sky, twisting vines, delicate petals, and gentle snowfall. Organic design elements emphasize the shades of green within each green diamond that mirror those found in the natural world. You can find all of our nature-inspiredgreen diamond engagement ringsin our Green Diamond Collection. Melanie loves the Trestle Ring with a green diamond because it emulates the vine-like braided band. The Poppy Seed Ring uses minimal accent work like tiny seeds that seem to bloom into a center when set with a green focal diamond.
Truly One of a Kind
Sometimes, a green diamond is so striking, it inspires an entirely new design. Rather than set that focal stone into one of our beloved favorites from the permanent collection, Melanie creates something curated for that focal stone. While there isn’t an overarching theme for every fresh engagement ring, they all have one thing in common: they’ve never been seen before. One design inspired by green focal diamonds is the Bypass Ring, which features two showstopping pear cut green diamonds with a whopping total carat weight of 12.18ct. These diamonds are artfully angeled, seeming to pass one another like ships in the night. You can find all of Melanie’s one of a kind green diamond rings in our Green Diamond Collection but each one is extremely limited edition, once it's gone, it's gone for good.
